Aini New Year Festival in Ban Na, Xishuangbanna - December 2, 2011
The first of several days of celebration
Traveling by bus southeast of Jinghong
above the placid winding Mekong River to an Aini village New Year
celebration. Palm lined roadway with
papaya trees, tropical flowers of all kinds, banana trees, coconut trees,
traditional Aini homes of wood and or brick, corn fields, tuktuks, people
hauling loads of wood on their backs, piles of sand, a village with golden
temple, no indicator of ethnic dress yet....
Aini Girls Dancing |
After the fun dance event, there was a very informal
ethnic food and table presentation, followed by everyone sitting eight to a
table sitting on very small stools to enjoy the cooking efforts of the
villages. The men were most active in
preparation of all aspects of the event.
There were at least 30 tables full of dished that included: fried
buffalo skin, banana flower, hamburger
cooked in banana skins, spicy fish, tiger grass shoots, wild
green....corn wine, water and much merrymaking.
The tables were covered with banana leaves. The little bowls were made of coconut shells,
the wine glasses were of bamboo stem. It
was a fine meal.
